Tulsa Area Schools See Increase in Student Diversity

KWGS News File Photo

A new report shows an increase in the number of Hispanic numbers in various school districts. Sherri Fair is in charge of student data and assessment in the Union district. She says the growth is not just with Spanish speaking students.

"People automatically think ELL equates with Hispanic, and it doesn't. We have many, many, different languages spoken in the district. Our Hispanic population is our largest for our ELL."

ELL stands for English Language Learners. Fair says it is more than just learning conversational English. It takes five to seven years to become fluent in academic English.

"Because they need that opportunity to not just acquire basic language to use daily, but to acquire academic language, which is the language of learning. And that does take longer."

Union Public Schools has seen the largest increase in 2013.
