Rich Fisher

General Manager & host of StudioTulsa

Rich Fisher passed through KWGS about thirty years ago, and just never left. Today, he is the general manager of Public Radio Tulsa, and the host of KWGS’s public affairs program, StudioTulsa, which will celebrate its twentieth anniversary in August 2012 . As host of StudioTulsa, Rich has conducted roughly four thousand long-form interviews with local, national, and international figures in the arts, humanities, sciences, and government.  Very few interviews have gone smoothly. Despite this, he has been honored for his work by several organizations including the Governor's Arts Award for Media by the State Arts Council, a Harwelden Award from the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, and was named one of the “99 Great Things About Oklahoma” in 2000 by Oklahoma Today magazine.

In addition, Rich is an active musician. He’s currently the principal trombonist of the Signature Symphony at TCC, leads the Starlight Jazz Orchestra, and is a free-lance musician whose work ranges from the pit of touring Broadway musicals, to the salsa band, Grupo Salsabor.

WEB EXCLUSIVE: A Discussion with the Late American Composer Robert Ward (from the ST Archives)

Posted on Wednesday, April 3rd; originally aired in February of 1995.

Robert Ward, the highly acclaimed American composer, died today at age 95. Metropolitan Opera Presents Operatic Rarity

When a classical music fan thinks of "Francesca da Rimini", one immediately thinks of Tchaikovsky's famous tone poem. In fact, this brief episodic story from Dante's Inferno, became the most famous opera of a relatively unknown Italian 20th Century composer, Riccardo Zandonai. Librettist Tito Ricordi, Jr. adapted a play drawn from this historical episode, and envisioned it as revival of the grand Italian operatic tradition, with the music of Italy's greatest operatic composer, Giacomo Puccini. Unfortunately for Ricordi, Puccini had no interest in reviving the grand operatic tradition.

"Farewell, Dorothy Parker"

Aired on Wednesday, February 27th.

Dorothy Parker (1893-1967), the great American critic, fiction writer, poet, and satirist --- that famously witty (and frequently scathing) scribe whose many brilliant assertions include "I don't care what is written about me so long as it isn't true" and "if all the girls who attended the Yale prom were laid end to end, I wouldn't be a bit surprised" --- is now back in business. That is, she's cracking wise all over again, in a manner of speaking, in a new book.

"Behind the Scenes of American Diplomacy"

Aired on Tuesday, February 26th.

What does it take to be a successful diplomat? How does one best "train" or prepare for this type of work? And how, if at all, does the art of diplomacy differ from how it was, say, twenty or thirty years ago? A recent change of leadership at the U.S. State Department --- in the wake of last year's deadly attack on the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which resulted in the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens as well as three other Americans --- has reminded us, once again, of the serious challenges now facing the U.S. Foreign Service.
